Hi Everyone,
At The Bed Bug Authority, we’re not only celebrating looming events such as the official start of summer, graduations, Memorial Day, and Father’s Day, but marking the capstone of this time of year for our industry: “National Bed Bug Awareness Week.” The awareness campaign lasts from June 7-13, with June 10 specifically singled out as “National Bed Bug Day.” While it may not require popping champagne, the week has become an industry mainstay. This year marks almost a decade of driving awareness to the physical and psychological hazards bed bugs may engender, while spotlighting those in the industry who have novel ways of fighting them, such as Allergy Technologies and its groundbreaking ATAHC™ platform. With summer approaching, there is no shortage of bed bug news.

➡️ More on National Bed Bug Awareness Week: Founded by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), this year’s campaign has the unfortunate luck of falling in the same window as “National Forklift Safety Day,” which has a goal of bringing awareness to safe forklift practices and operator training. Yet while there are a mere 600,000 forklifts in the US [READ MORE], there are over 50 billion bed bugs, which establishes them as a matter of national public health, well-being and ‘Quality of Life.’ Our tongue-in-cheek comment should not minimize the week’s efforts, as NPMA increases its social media presence to bring bed bug messages to a greater audience. This specific week of June 7-13 was chosen by NPMA to coincide with the onset of “traveling bed bug” season, when vacations provide an opportunity for the bugs to “hitchhike” home with unsuspecting travelers, potentially creating residential infestations. The publication National Today, which tracks all US holidays, provides more information on the week’s events…[READ MORE]
➡️ Bed Bugs as a Crime Deterrent? While prisoners from Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs to Harvey Weinstein complain about the conditions of their jails, they are lucky they are not locked up in Antigua. Proving that even idyllic and pristine islands are free from bed bugs, an alleged drug trafficker, Semand Vivan Shammo AljIndo, has complained about bed bugs in his prison cell. The Canadian man is accused of smuggling over $100,000 worth of marijuana (equaling 26 lbs.) to the island on an Air Canada flight. He is awaiting trial in the majestic sounding “His Majesty’s Prison,” which seems quite less than majestic. Aljindo used a recent court appearance to complain to a judge about an infestation of bed bugs in his cell, forcing him to sleep on the floor. The judge did not express much sympathy, telling Aljindo to take the matter up with his lawyer, who could then file a complaint. If the threat of staying in bed bug-occupied prisons does not help reduce crime, we’re running out of deterrents …[READ MORE]
➡️ Perhaps Aljindo Can Share Any Proceeds: Should he be found not guilty of marijuana trafficking, maybe the alleged weed smuggler can contribute some of his $100,000 in drug proceeds to the Urbana, IL thrift shop, “Salt and Light.” The establishment lost about $45,000 of inventory after bed bug sightings caused them to clear out their stockpile of donated goods from their warehouse. ‘Salt and Light’ Executive Director Nathan Montgomery, who also sells groceries, decided to dispose of all the items out of caution. This is a cruel reminder about the dangers of picking up abandoned beds or furniture from the street and bringing them home: there is always a chance they may be populated by bed bugs that you do not see… [READ MORE]
➡️ Godzilla Isn’t the Only Creature Giving New York the Willies: Godzilla is estimated to be 300 feet tall, yet apple seed-sized bed bugs are an even bigger concern to New York State Assemblyman William Colton (D-Brooklyn), as per the New York Times. While the city is only ranked 15th in Orkin’s Bed Bug Index and the bugs are not a major topic of concern, Assemblyman Colon has a nit to pick with the city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). His anger stems from the MTA ceasing its daily reports disclosing bed bug sightings on buses or subways. Assemblyman Colton believes residents have a right to this information, especially those who find bed bugs objectionable and may want to re-route their commutes. His bill requiring the MTA to reinstate this service has passed the State Assembly and is now before the State Senate… [READ MORE]
➡️ Bed Bugs: Children Just Can’t Get Enough: To all frustrated authors out there: never give up. There is a market for every topic, including bed bugs, as Florida businesswoman and travel blogger Deanna Vigliotta learned. She turned an unexpected encounter with these pests while on the road into the book The Traveling Saleslady Meets Live Bed Bugs: Sales Tips Galore for Road Warriors, a blend of humor and travel insights for professionals. She was subsequently inspired to create a children’s book on bed bugs, while designing an entire curriculum around it. Her goal: aiding children in developing reading skills, while just as crucially helping youngsters process their emotions and worries caused by parents who may leave on business trips. Florida’s “KinderCinch Early Literacy Program” adopted Vigliotta’s efforts, providing classroom literacy kits consisting of her book, a plush and friendly bed bug, and materials designed to encourage reading and classroom participation…[READ MORE]
➡️ “Can I Bug You?”: We’re not just asking a polite question. We’re providing proof that every known earthly (or interstellar) topic – including bed bugs and other pests – now has a dedicated podcast. “Can I Bug You?” infiltrates a new niche, and while bed bugs must share top billing with other pests, they are still an audience draw. The podcast is taped at the University of California at Riverside (UCR) and released twice per month. It is hosted by UCR spokeswoman Jules Bernstein and a foremost expert on insects, Doug Yanega, the senior scientist at UCR’s Entomology Research Museum. Yanega explains why he has joined Joe Rogan, Amy Poehler and Bill Simmons in the podcast wars. “My primary motivation is basically a personal vendetta against misinformation,” he says, “of which there is way too much when it comes to arthropods – be it spider bites, killer bees, bed bugs, extinction, or many other topics.” His other goal is entertainment. Why not? If true crime podcasts can dominate the weekly listener charts, “Can I Bug You?” may have created its own unique space…[READ MORE]

➡️ Fun With Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT Style: ChatGPT, the most popular AI platform, uses the oddest example to discuss the chances of bed bugs being eradicated, as the bugs’ resurgence has likely turned into a permanent problem. Still, out of curiosity, we asked, “Will bed bugs ever be eradicated in the United States?” The AI “expert” replied with the most unexpected of analogies:
- “A useful comparison is head lice: modern medicine can control them fairly well, but society has never fully eradicated them.”
Strange comparison, but who are we to argue? It may be our boss someday.
The William Blair/PCO Bookkeepers US Pest Index: Again, this is a crucial marker of how your business compares to an approximation of where national revenues and infestation levels are landing. The overall pest index for February 2026 increased 8% year-over-year vs. February 2025. The long-term statistics for household pests have shown 10% year-over-year growth for over a half-decade, showing a slight lag in February’s numbers.
However, the slowing growth was due to an 18% decrease in year-over-year bed bug treatment revenue. However, there is no need for industry concern: they can vary with the weather. “This is the second month in a row that the index has hung below the long-term historical average,” said William Blair Researcher Tim Mulrooney. “Several companies have reported disruptive weather patterns causing operational disruption to start the year.” Dan Gordon, managing member of PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists, agrees: “The fundamentals remain strong.”
February’s results by segment include:
- The Residential Pest Index increased 11% year-over-year.
- The Commercial Pest Index increased 6% year-over-year.
- The Termite Index increased 5% year-over-year.
- The Bed Bug Index decreased 18% year-over-year.
- The Mosquito Index increased 20% year-over-year.

➡️ With ATAHC’s footprint growing across the US, our services are becoming increasingly sought. A growing number of housing authorities have reached out to us, and we have found exhibiting at small NAHRO conferences on a steady basis allows for more “personal time” than some larger events (which we still plan to attend). As always, our conversations have cemented our belief in the ATAHC platform, which we have found to be the most effective and consistent system for bed bug mitigation and structural public health nuisance pest treatment.
A recent jaunt brought us to neighboring Atlantic City, home of the spring conference and trade show sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of NAHRO (NJ NAHRO). As both a vendor and exhibitor, we were able to thoroughly explore the application of our system to specific concerns and challenges across the affordable housing spectrum. Our meetings with housing authority leaders, commissioners, and building managers largely elicited powerful reactions to our pillars: our success levels, our ability to customize our offerings to specific communities, our provision of data-driven analysis of our efforts, our dedication to employing residents as liaisons for our program under Section 3, and the strong relationships we cultivate strong with community residents. We also emphasize one of our crucial points of differentiation: we are a long-term sustainable solution for our partners, not an “in-and-out” operation.
“Events like NJNAHRO are critical because they bring together decision-makers who are looking for real solutions,” said Allergy Technologies President Joseph Latino. “ATAHC aligns with their missions by delivering results that benefit residents, staff and housing authorities.”

ActiveGuard® Mattress Liners are covered under U.S. Patents 5,916,580, 6,214,365, 6,440,438, and pending patents. ActiveGuard's formulation represents a unique and proprietary delivery system that offers sustained bioavailability of permethrin for two years. Allergy Technologies is a subsidiary of A. Carey Co. LLC, which focuses on using philanthropy as a core business strategy for its businesses. Through its Philanprofit (SM) strategy, a portion of all ActiveGuard proceeds go to help fund inner-city homeless and women's shelters and asthma clinics.
ActiveGuard Mattress Liners kill bed bugs. Research supports that after short exposure to ActiveGuard of only 10 min, bed bugs, regardless of their resistance level, begin to show significant reductions in feeding (biting) and a dramatic inability to lay eggs. Real world consequences of this data include discontinuation of population growth thereby halting progression of an incident to an infestation.
If you seek a proactive, preventative approach, ActiveGuard should be considered the centerpiece of your long-term solution to keep bedding from being infested! As part of a comprehensive strategy for treating an active bed bug infestation, ActiveGuard is an excellent choice for use as the final step in treating the mattress and box spring sleeping area. These liners' two-year ability to keep on killing bed bugs provides for continual prevention and control against any adult bed bugs, nymphs, or eggs missed during initial treatment and any bed bugs re-introduced after treatment.
