Hi Everyone,
Welcome to the first Bed Bug Authority of 2026, and a happy (belated) New Year to all.
For many, the Super Bowl is the first communal event of the new year. This year’s game saw the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots, 29-13. But all was not lost for the Patriots: there is another score by which to judge the two cities. The 2025 Orkin Pest Report (click here) ranks Seattle as the 39thmost bed bug-infested city in the nation, while Boston (the Patriots’ market) ranked 49th. For those who judge success by ‘Quality of Life’ stemming from “fewest bed bugs,” the Patriots carried the day. While they don’t get a parade or a trophy for this, the residents of Beantown can take solace in sleeping more easily than those in Emerald City.

➡️Modern Homes, New Surprises: As smart homes, technology, and home electronics become more popular and affordable, bed bugs have found new hiding places. Beyond their traditional locations (beds, upholstered furniture, baseboards, furniture seams, and more), they have expanded their “living” options.
- They have begun to hide in the crevices of warm, enclosed spaces such as televisions, gaming consoles, laptops, laptop bags, routers, and even phone cases. Why? Many of these items provide two things for bed bugs: openings the size of a credit card, which is all the space the bugs need to enter a new “home,” and a spot where they are not easily seen…READ MORE
➡️Let the Games Begin: Remember rumors of a bed bug infestation in Paris before the 2024 Summer Olympics? Several sightings of the pests in Paris triggered panic over the bugs appearing in the Olympic Village and at fan accommodations. The story was a canard, but global attention has lingered and is hard to debunk.
- A piece about the Olympic Village at the current Milan/Cortina Games noted the cleanliness of the facilities, and an editor used a reader’s comment as a bold “pull quote” within the piece for dramatic effect: “France is never living that down.”(click here). That comment alone drew almost 3,000 “likes.” It’s a reminder that even an exaggerated association with pests can leave a damaging impression about your community and city. Our ATAHC™ Program can help prevent or mitigate bed bug infestations, helping to prevent rumors from spreading in the first place. Even false claims about bed bugs can inflict reputational damage, as the pests elicit universal contempt.
➡️New Year, Same Problems: A newsworthy development indicates the new year will not bring any relief from bed bugs, and it adds a concern we have been tracking: caretakers' unwillingness to work in pest-infested communities and elderly care homes. Bed bug and cockroach infestations in a low-income community in Billings, Montana, have reached a point where caregivers are refusing to enter the building, leaving vulnerable residents without essential care.
-
Resident Robert Case has lived at Sage Tower for more than a decade and says, “It's an alright place, if they can get rid of the bed bugs and the cockroaches.” He identifies a reason the problems are not eradicated: building management relies solely on spraying to reduce the pest population, an ineffective solution compared to heat treatment. Nurse Vicki Zimmerer Scott broke the silence surrounding the facility and said at least five caregivers have refused to enter the building due to pest issues. “Nobody deserves to live like this,” Scott said. ATAHC’s attention to ‘Quality of Life’ is designed to prevent such conditions, especially when it becomes a matter of urgency for elder residential care.

➡️No Borders, More Problems: The 2025 “State of the Bed Bug Control Market Report” has arrived, offering a wealth of data providing insight into the bed bug control industry and potentially sparking ideas. READ MORE
- Spring has emerged as the peak season for bed bug calls, with 43% of respondents ranking it as their busiest time, a notable change from historical patterns, which were summer-dominated. Summer now accounts for 25% of peak activity, followed by fall and winter at 16% each.
- The “Bugs Without Borders” data has found the number of companies treating bed bugs declining to 82%, down from the mid-90% area as recently as 2018. This creates an opportunity for those still treating these pests to gain market share.
- It is universally acknowledged that bed bugs remain the most challenging pest to control. When asked to identify the hardest pest challenges, 24% of respondents chose bed bugs, twice as many as for German cockroaches (13%) and American cockroaches (12%). This provides an additional advantage to working with ATAHC, as our Program has achieved over 95% efficiency in eliminating pests from the communities we treat. Our “ATAHC Plus” program is engineered to eliminate cockroaches and rodents as well.
- On average, bed bug work generated 12.7% of revenue for PMPs in the past year, which is low until realizing that the growth in bed bug services has grown 70% over the past five years. Providing services in a growing space is a smart “first mover” advantage. Many PMPs are confident in this trendline: 41% of PMPs believe bed bug services will be a larger part of their revenue in 2026.

- While the ATAHC Program stresses heat as the most effective initial bed bug treatment, not all PMPs agree. Those not using heat are wasting time and resources. The ATAHC “Playbook” emphasizes heat treatment as the most effective first step.

All of the above indicators suggest that the bed bug problem is intractable, growing, and lucrative, creating opportunities for those wholook ahead. At ATAHC, we can help you dominate your market and supercharge your bottom line.
The William Blair/PCO Bookkeepers Pest Control Index: As we wrap the books on 2025, the all-important William Blair/PCO index takes center stage. ATAHC recently hosted over 30 pest management professionals for its inaugural “ATAHC Learning Symposium.” Executives and speakers were President Joseph Latino, left; Chairman Gus Carey, the fifth “head” from the left; Event Speaker Dominique Sauvage, center (with pink collar); and Event Speaker Chuck Cerbini, second from right.
➡️To make sure all key pest control parties under the ATAHC umbrella were aligned for the new year, Allergy Technologies hosted its inaugural “ATAHC Learning Symposium” in January, bringing together supervisors, technicians, and industry partners involved in delivering ATAHC services to affordable housing communities. Topics included real-world applications, emerging challenges, and opportunities for continuous improvement and growth. The conversation was not limited to the original “ATAHC Bed Bug Program;” it included “ATAHC Plus,” which targets rodents and cockroaches, and “ATAHC Complete,” which combines both programs.
President Joseph Latino opened the proceedings, emphasizing how the ATAHC Program had improved the ‘Quality of Life’ for affordable housing residents by making their homes a refuge and not a source of stress. He conveyed ATAHC’s ability to foster cooperation among residents, building management, and housing authorities, who had long been at odds. In addition to highlighting ATAHC’s ability to deliver added revenue streams to PMPs, he detailed the revenue growth potential of ATAHC Plus and ATAHC Complete. He concluded by emphasizing that consistency is necessary, continuous learning is essential, and technician discipline is crucial. “We want our PMPs to be at the tip of the spear of knowledge and field applicability,” he said.
Consultants Dominique Sauvage and Chuck Cerbini led sessions that broke down the Program's elements. Sauvage emphasized the importance of rapid, accurate data collection and reporting by PMPs for all resident encounters and treatment metrics. He also emphasized the need to promptly send this information to ATAHC for data synthesis. “We’re not only people-oriented,” said Sauvage, “but data-driven. And rapid entry of data ensures we are doing our job.” Cerbini focused on the crucial role of PMPs, the “boots on the ground,” in delivering upon our promises. He fully engaged the PMPs. “We feed off each other,” he said. “We give information to each other and see what’s worked in the field.”

ActiveGuard® Mattress Liners are covered under U.S. Patents 5,916,580, 6,214,365, 6,440,438, and pending patents. ActiveGuard's formulation represents a unique and proprietary delivery system that offers sustained bioavailability of permethrin for two years. Allergy Technologies is a subsidiary of A. Carey Co. LLC, which focuses on using philanthropy as a core business strategy for its businesses. Through its Philanprofit (SM) strategy, a portion of all ActiveGuard proceeds go to help fund inner-city homeless and women's shelters and asthma clinics.
ActiveGuard Mattress Liners kill bed bugs. Research supports that after short exposure to ActiveGuard of only 10 min, bed bugs, regardless of their resistance level, begin to show significant reductions in feeding (biting) and a dramatic inability to lay eggs. Real world consequences of this data include discontinuation of population growth thereby halting progression of an incident to an infestation.
If you seek a proactive, preventative approach, ActiveGuard should be considered the centerpiece of your long-term solution to keep bedding from being infested! As part of a comprehensive strategy for treating an active bed bug infestation, ActiveGuard is an excellent choice for use as the final step in treating the mattress and box spring sleeping area. These liners' two-year ability to keep on killing bed bugs provides for continual prevention and control against any adult bed bugs, nymphs, or eggs missed during initial treatment and any bed bugs re-introduced after treatment.
