Hello Everyone

The pandemic devastated the hospitality industry in 2020, halting business and leisure travel to destinations around the world. This year however, 2021 is poised to be a year of strong and steady growth for hotels as millions of people seek to travel once again. We are committed to supporting hospitality's recovery by re-launching The Hotel Bed Bug Authority, your quarterly guide to preventing bed bugs in the hotel industry.

This month’s edition of The Hotel Bed Bug Authority seeks to identify the risk bed bugs present to the recovering hospitality and travel market. A bed bug - guest encounter detailed in a subsequent social media post can harm a brand when travelers are researching their long-delayed travels. In addition, we will discuss a recent survey conducted through Hotel Business on how hoteliers view bed bugs and their impact on their industry.

Allergy Technologies recently conducted a survey in conjunction with Hotel Business on bed bugs, exploring their impact on day-to-day operations to budgeting and cost allocation. Although we learned a tremendous amount through the 14 question survey, two key takeaways stand out:

  1. Bed bug remediation is simply no longer enough for the vast majority of hoteliers. Prevention is the preferred strategy to protect brand reputation, reduce legal liability, enhance guest confidence, protect stakeholder equity, and increase hotel revenue.
  2. Hoteliers largely do not have a single line item on their P&Ls that directly address the overall cost of a bed bug incident. In order to best understand how much of an impact bed bugs truly have on your property, bed bug related-costs should be ideally captured on a single line item. These costs include remediation, discarded soft-goods, lost room revenue as well as any bed bug-related compensation given to a guest.

As the hospitality industry experiences gradually improving occupancy rates and revenues reach pre-pandemic levels, embracing bed bug prevention will make a significant difference in a hotel’s path towards recovery.

ActiveGuard Mattress Liners are covered under U.S. Patents 5,916,580, 6,214,365, 6,440,438 and pending patents. ActiveGuard's formulation represents a unique and proprietary delivery system that offers sustained bioavailability of permethrin for two years.  Allergy Technologies is a subsidiary of A. Carey Co. LLC, which focuses on using philanthropy as a core business strategy for its businesses. Through its Philanprofit (SM) strategy, a portion of all ActiveGuard proceeds go to help fund inner-city homeless and women's shelters and asthma clinics.

ActiveGuard Mattress Liners kill bed bugs. Published research supports that after short exposure to ActiveGuard of only 10 min, bed bugs regardless of their level of resistance, begin to show significant reductions in feeding (biting) and a dramatic inability to lay eggs. Real world consequences of this data include discontinuation of population growth thereby preventing progression of an incident to an infestation.

If you are seeking a pro-active preventative approach, ActiveGuard should be considered as the centerpiece of your long term solution to keep from being infested! As part of a comprehensive strategy for treating an active bed bug infestation, ActiveGuard is an excellent choice for use as the final step in treating the mattress and box spring sleeping area. These liners' two-year ability to keep on killing bed bugs provides for continual prevention and control against any adult bed bugs, nymphs or eggs missed during initial treatment and any bed bugs re-introduced after treatment has been concluded.
